wasp's nest near front door - kill or leave be?
#21
why put other people at risk, i.e. postal carrier, visitor, etc? Pretty foolish, in my opinion.

I put this in the "My dog won't bite" category. Few people I trust enough to take their word for it.

I swell up pretty good from a bee sting. And as far as I know, I'm not prone to anaphalactic shock. There's no way for me to know who is and how isn't without asking, and by then they're within stinging range.

If they sting, kill 'em all.

Honeybees would be something of an exception since it would be very unusual to have them build their hive on a house, particularly near a door. And as this is the Internet, no doubt it's happened.

IF they did, I'd have a keeper safely remove them.

Otherwise, it's kill 'em all.

This is the Internet, and the following did happen:
A few years back, my best friend came home from work, to find her house full of bees. They came down the chimney. Well, to be precise, the Queen squeezed through the cinder mesh on top of the chimney, and a few thousand faithful followers followed.
This wasn't nearly as funny as the time she woke up late one night to find her bedroom full of baby Preying Mantises, but that is another story.

She called a beekeeper, from a pay phone, who was only too glad to deswarm her chimney, free, and he left an old wood beehive behind in case it ever happened again, but it didn't. Just in case, she replaced the cinder mesh with a finer weave.
The swarm came from an ancient, massive, California oak in one corner of her property, that had been hit by lightning a few decades ago. The beekeeper said that the hive there was also several decades old. In all the years that she lived there, and with all the parties, nobody had ever been stung. Well, at least, not by a bee.

She and her husband has my view towards Yellow Jackets, but maybe a little more extreme. I'm careful not to leave anything thermonuclear unattended around them.

Front door = eviction notice.

Yard, I'd let them bee...

My brother-in-law discovered this in my back yard a couple weeks ago. It was gone as soon as I could get some spray. It was about the size of my head. I'm not sure how I had never seen it before. It is right next to where I cut the grass.
