"i had my father's old gillette super speed, black bottom" - Rob
From what I've read, you would have to look long and hard and probably spend lots of money to improve on that.

I've hesitated trying anything different, but loathe paying the super high prices (even when buying in bulk at Costco) for these blades.
PeterB mentioned about 3 years ago the trick of sharpening the blades on a pair of jeans:
http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...sg-1148904
It's also been mentioned multiple times on various sites (Gizmodo, Lifehacker, etc.):

I've been doing this for the past couple of months and have been able to extend the life of my blades from about one week to about 3 weeks using one technique (though not the one I just found at the Giz link above - I will try that technique and see if I can get them to last even longer).

Pinkoos,
That method isn't going to sharpen the blades. Rather, it will remove excess crud that gets on the blade as a result of shaving and probably to a very limited degree realigns the grains of the metal. I can see trying it with expensive cartridges but definitely not worth the effort on dirt cheap plain ol' DE blades.

Interesting. Regardless, I can confirm that the trick does work very very well.
Incidentally, I just started using Gillette's new Flex Ball razor:

It definitely improves the experience and the outcome of shaving.

Meh! They are ok blades. I had more trouble with delivery than with the blades themselves. The local dollar general has the exact blades and handles for the same price.

Deck,
That's the funny thing. I've shaved with lather, with just putting a thin coat of cream on my face and mushing it around, shaving oil, you name it. I've tried it. Personally, I find the idea of lather overrated. Same thing with brush. Lathering resulted in a marginal improvement at best and actually a worse shave at times despite using a quality soap/cream/etc and proper technique with or without a quality brush. Me, I'll stick with a small amount of cream, slathered over my face. Occasionally I'll break out the brush when I have time to spare. It works for me. I get a wife approved baby bottom shave every time I break out the razor.

$25! I'd rather use the back of my leather belt or just continue using my jeans (which has been working great).
