XBox on the way out too?

Interesting article yesterday from an obscure site connects the dots:

Yesterday, Microsoft announced some new updates to its upcoming Windows 10. However, those updates were nothing short of a subtle attempt to drop the Xbox brand. Xbox Music is now coming as Groove on Windows 10. Xbox Video will debut as Movies & TV On the new OS. Microsoft has been dropping the Xbox brand from its services for a while and it seems the Xbox brand has reached a point of no return.

Microsoft’s Xbox ultimate Game Sale is kicking off today in a massive PR stunt that will see more than 70 titles going on sales with as much as 50% discounts...The gaming industry might focus on the fact that Microsoft is trying to reignite interest in its Xbox system with the discount sales. However, it appears more like Microsoft wants to put Xbox behind it and it would practically auction off its titles for what it could get.

The Xbox has largely underperformed in sales at least in relation to Sony’s PS4 and it isn’t strange that Microsoft is dropping the brand. Recent sales figure shows that PS4 has about 23.3M units lifetime sales in relation to Microsoft’s 12.8M unit lifetime sales.

It is doubtful that Microsoft will keep the segment along much longer. The market shouldn’t be surprised if rumors about the potential sales of the Xbox unit becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Best case scenario for current XBox owners may be a sale of a spun-out division. More likely, it seems to me, is XBox becoming another victim of Nadella's "tough choices".

Looks more like merging gaming into the Windows 10 environment. Lots of gaming has moved back to the computer.

True dat. But XBox has only been marginally profitable for MS over the years - why hold on to the underperforming asset of a separate gaming system when you're trying to consolidate?

Master Chief collection was a huge fail, broken for over 100 days. Games for the XbOne are on sale nearly continuously, and I don't recall M$ paying for as many cross platform exclusive release titles like they did in the past.

I know a lot of Xbox gamers. Seems like there would be a lot of disappointed people who would not transition happily back to PC gaming if the Xbox flames out. At least not on Windows. Perhaps Steam on Linux.

I'm a Sony, Nintendo, and Android gamer at the moment, but I like competition.

I remember that xbox was set up to lose money for years to nab market share. Did it ever turn a profit?

My son just won an X-box1 at his college registration - that is a sure sign it is getting dumped
