Why are fanny packs now deprecated?

Agreed. For day hikes my pack of choice is a Mountainsmith Tour Pack. I have an older one from the mid-90's before they outsourced manufacturing to China. Still holds up great, just the right amount of room, and can hold a heavy load comfortably without restricting climbing like a backpack does. Keeps the back cool and dry too. Of course this is a lumbar pack, worn higher than the fanny. Keeps the weight close to your center of gravity and over your hips/legs.
