MLB-Why Would I Want to Watch Guys Chew Tobacco
#11
Baseball is not a TV sport; it is a totally different beast watching in person. Once you know the game, you realize that the game can be quite cerebral.

However, I don't watch MLB; IMHO they lost touch with the fans years ago. I watch minor league ball, usually AA or below and really enjoy it. I know they are part of the MLB system, but these younger players are personable, approachable and still have I hunger for the game.

You are simply unaware of what's great about baseball. You could learn to understand and enjoy it because it is truly an enjoyable sport.

Why do so many baseball fans trot out this tired, insulting argument? It's pretty arrogant to assume that the only reason baseball bores the crap out of some of us is that we don't understand it. It's also insulting to assume that we'd be better off if we DID want to blow three hours watching a game.

And seeing it in person doesn't necessarily help. I liked baseball when I was a kid and was mainly hearing the games on the radio. Actually seeing a pro game bored me to death.

My second year of college, I started to go a bit overboard following sports. I realized I was devoting fifteen, twenty hours a week to it, and not getting anything in return. I gave it up.

I don't think I ever spent that much time on it, but I came to a similar conclusion about spending weekend afternoons watching football. Passively enjoyment of sports (sitting on my a$$ watching) is a lousy way to spend more than a small portion of my life.

It is equally insulting to assume that all who enjoy watching spectator sports are brain-dead morons who can only find enjoyment in the more seemier aspects of the human condition, like the discharge of bodily fluids or guys getting kicked in the nads (not that there's nothing enjoyable about THAT!).

How about living and letting live?
After all, it is the anti-baseball side who started this worthless thread.

I'm with Seacrest. There's so many disdainful remarks made about baseball and its followers that a simple "you would like it if you understood it" seems like a pretty civilized way to respond. I don't think it suggests that someone is incapable of understanding (and appreciating) it, merely that they currently do not.

It ain't rocket science.
The basic rules are rather simple to comprehend (if one wants to).

I've never understood the need for some people's "holier than thou" attitudes when it comes to dealing with their own insecurities and inadequecies.
Pretty sad if that's what it takes to feel good about yourself.

I went out and bought a TV.
I watched the Yankees lose.
I'm happy. :-)

Who assumed that? We're not talking about ultimate fighting or "pro" "wrestling" so seaminess is not the issue.

However, I'm really sick of that "you just don't understand the game" crap. It IS insulting, and based on a faulty assumption anyway: that understanding something means you will automatically like it. If you want to spend huge chunks of time watching baseball, that's up to you. But don't assume that it's exciting to everyone, or that those who don't want to spend time that way are too ignorant to enjoy it.

I certainly don't understand everything about football, nor do I want to, but I sometimes enjoy watching it regardless. I enjoy it far less than I used to, though, because these days commercial interruptions ruin the pace of the game and announcers can't stop their inane blather for even a millisecond. And then there's John Madden. WHY is there John Madden?

Also, while we're picking nits, tobacco juice dribble isn't really a bodily fluid, although there must be some spit in it.

If you don't care to watch baseball, that's your right. It needs no explaining. No one insulted you. You extrapolated that from some vapor of some sort.

Did you miss the "people who don't like baseball don't understand the game" comment?

Re-read the thread. I simply pointed out that the comment is insulting and condescending. Why is that so difficult to grasp? Think about it.
