Was the loading hatch on the bottom of the plane, underneath the pallet? Maybe the loadmaster will be reassigned. Sounds like maybe the load slid or a/the pallet broke up.

Perhaps they were hoping it would fall out sometime after leaving the airport, where it would be easier for some lucky people to "find" it.
