measure this MBP
#1
would one of you with a MBP 15" of recent vintage, please measure the height of the top of the shell when fully open and the back is elevated 3".

Doing some planning for a desk unit.

I estimate < or = 12.5".

How recent? My Early-2013 15" MBP Retina stands almost exactly 10" tall when open at 90º on my desk. Add 3" to that, I guess?

Here are the Apple specs for the most recent 15" MBP.

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP794?locale=en_US

Size and Weight

Height: 0.61 inch (1.55 cm)
Width: 13.75 inches (34.93 cm)
Depth: 9.48 inches (24.07 cm)
Weight: 4.02 pounds (1.83 kg)3

So, that 9.48" + 3" is just about 12.5"

I'm assuming that the way the hinge works, the edge of the top cover will swing to where it's just about flush with the bottom of the bottom case, so no additional height is incurred from that 0.61" height of the closed MBP.

This assumption is not true with my machine. Hence, the nearly 10" measured height. Smile

Your's doesn't look like this picture? I don't actually have this model, I'm just going on how they've done the screen hinge in the past and pictures of more recent models.

It's close, but no cigar. Then, it's a 2013, so perhaps they were less compact?
