I have started putting a reasonable reserve price, and stating what it is, on anything with a BIN in order to keep the BIN price alive and available for a reasonable amount of time. If you don't do this then the first yo-yo that see's your auction is gonna bid .99ยข to get rid of the BIN and make sure that they can get the item for a steal, or so they think.
I clearly state in the auction that the reason for the reserve is to keep the BIN option alive for at least part of the auctions lifecycle.
Sure you will drive off some bidders this way but if the person isn't willing to pay the reserve price then I would rather not have them bidding in the first place! I have also had bidders ask if I would sell the item in a second chance offering if it doesn't hit the reserve so take that for what it's worth...
