Setting Up An IMAP server on Mac OS X?
#1
Ideally I'd like to go ahead and set up an IMAP server on my G5 rather than paying my friend money to do it.

I did some quick googling and came up empty.

Any places to start?

And, also with IMAP, I'd like the full shebang, being able to send and receive mail too, just store it all on the server.

Sounds like what you want is a copy of OS X Server...
I think OWC still has OEM copies for $129 (?).

I don't know of any other mail server solutions as easy or as cheap.
But then, I don't know much period...

You have everything you need already in plain old OS X 10.4.X

Here's some hints on how to do it:

You can do it all yourself, but for $10 this will do it for you:

Sweet! Thanks.

I figured to turn this into a learning opportunity when my friend told me it would cost more if I wanted to pay month by month to host my mail.

Here's another link that may help you:

Do you already have a domain name? I use a combination of DNSupdate and a free DNS server at ZoneEdit.com for my home email and it works perfectly (although my IP address via TimeWarner/RoadRunner hasn't changed in the 2 years I've lived in this house).

Yes, I've got a domain name.

I haven't had a problem with IP addresses although I did get a new one a few months ago after having the same one for several years.

Thanks again!
