I would think humidifying would make the strings less likely to break. I don't have any classical guitars, but none of my steel strings has ever broken inside the case.

Just out of curiosity, where along the strings did they break?

It appears that they "broke" down close to the tuning pegs. What they did was to split apart and unwind.
