Is DSL ISP# changeable?

Had cable too - not worth the money for what I need

Baby Tats, Bellsouth in Atlanta offers DSL at 6 Mbps/512 Kbps for $42.

But then again I'm still on their original 1.5 Mbps/256 Kbps and that's plenty fast for me. What am I missing, especially if most servers I encounter can't even fill faster than 1.5 Mbps to me?

I also have the same config as Carm does:
Westell 6100 DSL Modem
IP address: 192.168.1.1
username: admin
password: password

I at least thought when I downloaded firefox that I'd do
better than 55 kbps.

"Why do you want to change your ISP or IP?"
I guess due to a bit of paranoia, so many sites record your ISP, I'd like
the option of having a diff number.

Thanks

That does sound real slow but it might be on the server end

You might try a download from a few different sights and see if it is specific
to the FF server or a problem someplace else

Use a proxy.
Although that opens a whole new can o' worms sometimes.

Just tried downloading ffmpegx and got 53kbps.So it's consistantly
slow.

How are you measuring the download speed? Most browsers when they display download speed/progress use units of Bytes/sec not bits/sec. Are you possibly getting 8 times the speed that you think you're getting.

Have you tried any of the speed test sites like the one Seacrest suggested? Those do convert the speeds to bits/sec.

GGD, You may indeed be partly correct in that I am estimating my DL speed using Safari and Firefox, however, even with dialup I get 6 kbps. I would expect to do better than 8 times better than dialup.

Also, as I posted above with speedtest.com,
"I just used Seacrests' test and got 447/130 --so I may be
calling verizon. "

I called the verizon line and tried a little experiment. I removed my
phone (and its appropriate dsl filter) from the second jack socket
that is shared with the modem (that's how they told me to set it up)
and was able to do a little better- DL speed rose from 50 to 80
kbpd.

Unless I am mistaken... that 192.xx IP address is a DCHP served address. If you had additional devices on the network they'd sequentially IP address issued

xx.2
xx.3

etc

Thanks Larry, I think the 192.xxxx addrress is not
what the outside world sees, By looking at verizons speedtest
site and some proxy checker sites, I think that what the outside world
sees is a kind-of verizon proxy; I found that this changes when the
modem is turned off and on.

Happy N Year to all.
