But why? Why bloodshed? What is so bad about white life in this country that we have to burn it all down to see justice?
The MAGA insurrection was well fed, warmly dressed, arrived in safe planes and vehicles in comfort. They were educated in the very schools they insist can't educate anyone. No one asked for their papers. No one ever burned their church. They seem to have jobs, because they had one to get fired from when they were seen on video. They had cell phones capable of live-streaming their activities. They can safely walk by any cop in the country and have no fear of being challenged, even when dragging gallows and zip ties to the Capitol. And they all went home to see the results of their labors unfold on their widescreen TVs.
What is their problem???
And I say that as someone who enjoys every one of the advantages I described.
It's called relative deprivation, and its promoter within the study of political instability and ideological conflict was Ted Gurr.
It's not about what they have. It's about the perceived gap between what they have and what they feel they ought to have, in particular relative to an imagined future based on current trends. The ideological component determines who or what is considered to be responsible for this gap, and resulting sense of deprivation.
As wages and opportunities have stagnated for working people (blue and white collar), many White Americans have felt as though they should have better options and outcomes than they have realized, based on their expectations of the country and future. This is inseparable from the sense of entitlement that White people have become acculturated to over centuries of supremacist practices in this country. The elimination of a solid middle class and growing encroachment of non-Whites into spheres that confer advantage (higher education, for example) have left many Whites with substantial privilege feeling that they've been deprived of something they deserve, and when they look for a scapegoat, the growing non-White population makes for an easy target. Making America 'great again' is about the restoration of that upward trajectory for Whites, bolstered by a government that puts them first and an economy that rewards them disproportionately.
In other words, MAGA = Make America White Again
FTFY. Otherwise, your analysis is completely on point.
