As remakes go, this one might not be too terrible...

and yet, he still refuses to name the movie.

Not necessary, since it's already been named twice!
When I posted, it was only said ONCE (as verified by find in page) and it wasn't stated as fact. Seemed like a guess.

Googling for any of the info I mentioned would have told you in a nanosecond (well maybe not quite that fast)

Never saw the original, so character descriptions are totally lost.

Didn't read the book either? That was a pretty popular one amongst Stephen King fans. Unsurprisingly, the book was MUCH better than the movie, but the movie did have its high points: David Keith was excellent as Andy McGee, and Drew was actually pretty good in her role too, especially considering her age, though a lot of people made fun of her performance. The special effects were decent too, and Tangerine Dream's soundtrack was also quite good.

Googling the info was too much work Wink

....honestly, there has been maybe 1-4 good adaptations of King's works.....either most of his stuff doesn't translate well or they were not done well.....don't find a story about a pyrokinetic to be that enthralling....

Mostly I agree with you ... one of my other favorite adaptations of his was The Stand (the 1990's version, not the horrid recent one)...

But to say that Firestarter is just about a pyrokinetic isn't quite fair. It's also about clandestine government experiments into drug-induced torture and psychic phenomena (which has a basis in real life, for example Google for MKUltra), eugenics, government overreach with private citizens, etc. As books go, it was actually fairly ahead of its time. It's a bit similar to Jurassic Park, in that the book goes into far more detail than the film, and the film is more or less a crowd-pleaser and far less intellectually-based than the book. (I'm a big fan of the book in that case, not so much the film.)

Honestly, most of Stephen King's books weren't that hot.

-The Stand was great (the original edited version)

-The Gunslinger stuff was decent

-The Shining was decent, and Kubrik's movie was good

-I enjoyed some of his short stories

-A few others weren't bad: Misery, Dolores Claiborne, etc.

Not everyone likes his writing, I agree. The Stand and Firestarter are amongst my faves, but I also think that Salem's Lot, Carrie, and It are up there... I actually didn't care that much for the likes of Misery, The Shining, etc. ... and as for the best film adaptations, I'd say The Stand (1990's version), Carrie (1970's version), It (most recent version), The Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption are all up there.

Give credit where credit is due -- although not everything he's done is to everyone's taste (not by a long shot!) -- he's certainly been prolific and has come up with some very memorable stories: https://screenrant.com/every-stephen-kin...est-worst/

PeterB,

You forgot the big screen version of Misery. Great book and a fantastic movie. Right up there with Shawshank!

Robert, no I didn't ... read what I posted. NOT a fan of Misery (I know, surprising)... I know a lot of people liked that one.

Peter,

I couldn't tell if you were talking about the book or the screen adaptation. I can't say I was a big fan of the book. Actually, not generally a fan of any of King's books. Short fiction, definitely. Novels, less so. Most of the film adaptations are garbage. Some are excellent. Misery (the film) falls into the category of excellent films. Still vastly prefer Shawshank (both the novella and the film), though.
