Install and use Microsoft Update (as opposed to Windows Update) and you'll get all of your OS and Microsoft Office/other MS apps' updates at the same time.

Keep track of which update is crashing.
Nuke and pave. Start updates and uncheck the one that is causing the problems. If it completes without the bad one, make a backup and then try to download and apply the problem one.

I had to reinstall Windows XP on Monday. There were 92 updates. Fortunately, they all went through without a hitch!

This is a BRAND new laptop from Dell. The only applications installed were MS Office components. I think that I finally got it to work. I found in the event log that the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service was failing and would not start. I had to re-register it then things started to work, but let me tell you, the error was not at all clear. I had to Google a 14 digit number and read through 4 pages of forum postings until I found the process to jump start things. I'm not exactly a novice at this. I'm maintaining 8 W2k3 server, 2 Exchange Servers, 160 Users, and 130 computers. I've probably installed Windows 200 times. But this was a new one. SP3 for XP should be due real soon. Everytime that they get up to about 100 updates after the last service pack they release another one.

We bought a three year extended warranty on a Dell laptop only to find out later on that it only takes care of hardware issues. Software? Call the vendors! Yes, it's an expensive learning experience.

Read on SlashDotCom the other day that some guy put together an iso file containing all the XP patches released since SP2 was released. The count was over a hundred patches. You had to download it via Bittorrent and burn your own CD disk. It would save the time consuming task of downloading these from the MS server.

And it will be outdated tomorrow. |
