I can say with 99% certainty this is a scam unless Apple changed it's policy in the last 6 months. When Dateline did their program on iPod losses they quoted Apple as having said they do not track iPods, nor will they. They have done one-offs I think, but certainly they do not have a department that coordinates this. Typically "loss prevention" at Fortune 500 companies doesn't mean customer's losing items it means customers/employees STEALING their merchandise and IP.

I am one person and I have three iPods--a Mini that won't hold a charge anymore, a Shuffle that I wear during exercise and a Classic that has just about everything I own on it. So yeah, family of at least five, a dozen iPods? Perfectly understandable, no need for alarm or a lecture on excess consumption in the Western world.

Back on track, I'd guess fraud. I've never seen a reference to an "Apple Loss Prevention" department, let alone one mentioning it working externally.

This stinks. I wonder if this is an isolated incident or the beginning of something.

One of the basic rules is -- never clink on the link provided, use one you've looked up. (This doesn't work in the case of DNS hijacking, apparently.)
