One symptom is that it will behave as if the RAM is not installed at all (empty slot).

The system might not start up. It might not start up and might instead beep one or more times when pressing the power button. It might start up, but then crash or freeze or panic during startup. It might start up, but then crash into Darwin before the login window shows. It might start up, but then fail to recognize the additional memory. It might start up, but then crash or freeze or panic when attempting to allocate parts of that memory to the OS or to an application. It might start up and appear to run normally, but fill up your drive with logs of various errors. It might start up and appear to run normally, but occasionally operations that involve reading and writing from that memory will end up with bad data, manifesting in occasional video glitches. It might start up and appear to run normally, but occasionally operations that involve reading and writing from that memory will end up with bad data, manifesting in device or driver failure that you might observe as USB or FireWire devices dropping off of the bus. It might start up and appear to run normally, but occasionally operations that involve reading and writing from that memory will end up with bad data, ultimately corrupting the file-structure of your hard drive. It might rattle when you shake it.

Did you just install RAM into the machine in question?
If not, I don't see how RAM would unseat. I could see if you had a stick of RAM go bad. That's happened to me before but once RAM is installed securely; I really don't see how it could pop out of its socket.

Nope - I didn't just install any ram - just was trying to troubleshoot something on my Mac. |
