Dish/DirecTV followup
#1
Original thread: http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,569905

Brief synopsis if you're too lazy to click and read:

I have DirecTV, wanted to upgrade to HD package, called and tried to get "new subscriber" rate, they told me to blow it out my ass.

So I did my homework, got all the costs, and called DirecTV up and told them I was switching to Dish next week... should I cancel with you now, or call back next week? When asked why, I said that Dish was $10/month cheaper, I'd get 3 free months, and a free HD DVR.

Well, they didn't quite match Dish, but here's what I got: A free HD DVR. New subscribers get that, but existing customers pay $199. They're also taking $10/month off for 12 months. They're also giving me 6 months of HD Access (normally $10/month) for free. And 3 free months of Starz.

I had to agree to a 2 year commitment, but I'd have had to do that with Dish as well. I am only going to pay a couple of dollars more than if I was a new subscriber. So I'm pretty happy.

Nice!

I used to do that with Comcast all the time for internet... threatened to move to DSL (even though it wasn't even available where I lived!) and kept the intro rate for 2 full years.

Yup...
You got transferred to the "Customer Retention" department..
Friend of mine worked for that branch in the phone bank.. he always had a "list" of stuff he was authorized to offer people to convince them not to drop DirecTV.

Nice.

Thanks for sharing.

It's always great to hear how people "play chicken" without actually committing to canceling. I hate saying "I'm cancelling" just to hear the deals they'll offer. I like the way you phrased it.
