Given the run-up to meeting Syler's father, and the history of casting the really important folks with Roddenberry's peeps, and the super special Star Trek TMP "preview" event, I was 95% sure it was going to be Nimoy.
So who was this guy? An actor I'd know if I was more of a hollywood junkie?

I knew it had to be someone from the Trek universe. Big DS9 fan here-- can't place him though. Really don't want to look it up--I'm still feeling some withdrawal from the big build-up . . . Did he play Dukat maybe? Oh . . . . whazzisname, the Bajoran leader who was hooked up with Kira, right? (edit- never saw Smallville)
