I used to rip at 320AAC and somewhat recently switched to Apple Lossless.
I believe iTunes takes whatever size/type of file one usually uses and transcodes it, on the fly to 128/256K for the Shuffle, each time it's synced, when new music is added. In theory, those smaller files live only on the Shuffle and not in iTunes proper.
If I could do something similar, that is have my music transcoded to 320AAC as I synced, that would be great! AL on the Mac, AAC on the 'Phone and 'Pods.
That's what I was hoping for, anyway.
