Quite a few places just do that as a standard practice. There is a restaurant up the street from me that serves ice water that has cucumbers soaking in it. It is a very refreshing taste.

I like the lemon in the water. However, I never ask for it. On the other hand, a friend of mine no matter where we go asks for "water, no lemon" before he even knows how they serve it.

For a couple of years, I have been warned not to request such a service due fecal matter in the lemon peels. Last night, I finally felt compelled to pull up the research that led to such a warning. As it turned out, there is more to the story: According to the research study, without a thorough cleaning, most restaurants use the same knife that has been cutting meat to cut lemons and/or used the same cutting board for both. Hence, it's the cross-contamination.

I'd be surprised if the ice doesn't contain more contaminants than any lemon slice.
My wife is a big lemon in the water person. Me, not so much.

I request lemon not be placed in my water. I've always thought that was kind of dumb and cannot see the point.

The lemon makes the water, esp. in So. CA, easier to drink.

Los Angeles Tap Water Judged Tastiest in World
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,332173,00.html I think the water here in Oakland is the best. It flows from the high Sierra and is not too processed.

I will not even dignify that link with a click. You have got to be kidding. Just look at the mandated yearly water quality reports for a real numerical quantitative and unbiased report.
