OS disks?
I routinely get DVDs from the library that look as if someone taped them to the bottom of their shoes and shuffled across concrete. I don't see how you can "accidentally" cause as much damage as I've seen on some.

They (the discs) can go bad all by them selves carefully archived and the box dusted and cleaned religiously.
If you want to build a shrine around 2 cents worth of plastic you are free to do so. Some people would rather polish their knob.
