Best Buy bleeding and closing large stores

there was a piece on NPR last night about people going into Best Buy (and equivalents), then scanning the bar codes to get the Amazon price while still in the store.

Other than something need right away, why even go in?

Best Buy is doomed.

I live in a pretty big market (Orlando), and all the "boutique" A/V stores that catered to audio/video-philes have all closed their doors. Besides, Joe Sixpack, who is used to going to Best Buy to look at TVs before buying them online, isn't going to wander into one of those stores. Everything would be out of his price range.

bestbuy.com has some vinyl on sale with free shipping.

albums start at $4.99, though it looks like most are out of stock until you hit $7.99.

And BB used to think people like me who waited for open box items marked down were bad.

Their service sucks, and their staff is clueless (at least at my local BB), and I have complete faith that any opened package is a defective item thrown back on the shelf.

It doesn't help Best Buy when they overprice accessories in order to make profit. Why should I go to BB and get an HDMI cable for $75 when I can get the same cable from Amazon for $25 or Monoprice for $5.00? If they were to lower the prices to at least Amaxon levels, then they'd have to sell more, but they also may attract more local customers who don't want to wait 3-7 days for that HDMI cable if it's close to the same price as an Internet retailer is selling it for.

when you can buy a $5 cable and pay overnight shipping and still be $50 ahead, you know BB is screwed.

What was the name of the online store that had free overnight shipping on everything? They had the commercials with a cannon shooting hamsters at a target.

I fondly remember ordering a $2 USB cable at 8 PM and having it before 10 AM the bext day.

Then there was Value America. Many a DM member enjoyed running them into the ground!
