The a la carte fantasy with ‘only what you want’ = cheap was a poorly thought out daydream by users in general. The idea that content would go a la carte and content providers wouldn’t find a way to maximize profit from it was a surprising blind spot most users and pundits succumbed to, as far as I remember.

Best I can tell, the sweet spot for the typical, I-want-everything-I-want-and-I-want-it-now user is a barebones cable + internet package paired with rotating in and out of the streaming service only as you actually need them.

You can still save money, just not at the McDonald’s Value Menu levels we all hoped for.

I subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and STILL have Extended Basic through Charter or Spectrum, whatever the hell they call it now.

I would LOVE to cut cable, but my old Pop loves his Nascar, so that's pretty much why I still have it.

I don’t know, I think the current model at least let’s me choose where my $$ goes. With cable, it was pretty much all-you-can-eat or nothing.

This ‘golden age’ is more money in - the assumption is we will be further monetized.

You know the end is near when the cable companies double their internet-only rates.

The all you can eat model is a waste, so many unwatched/unwatchable channels.
We went from $180 for internet phone cable combo to internet and phone.($59 package 500/500)

We already had
Amazon Prime video (included with prime)
Netflix ($16) shared cost in-laws. ($8)

Added
Hulu Package Disney Plus w/no Ads $18 (shared cost) ($9)

Net Savings and we get to watch a lot of TV on Hulu.
