Dead snake at my back door
#1
It looks like one of the yard cats left me a present this morning. A non poisonous snake, about a foot long was laying at my back door.

I was honored that a cat thought highly enough of me to do this, but saddened that such a young snake died as a result. Cats really are destructive creatures.

They do what they do and they do it well.

Maybe it's been dumped by the local school...

I don't recommend training them to retrieve skunks.

Some cable TV show determined that the cat is the most prolific killer of any animal in the world, killing more species of living things than even humans.

Sounds like narrowly defined hype for effect. Humans are far more destructive and harm a much broader range of living things.

Cats are efficient predators, certainly. I don't believe in allowing domestic pet cats to roam outdoors for that reason as well as the obvious ones related to the pet's length of life.

Here in the UK the RSPB has found that domestic cats are the biggest threat to the wild bird population than the next few categories put together which includes natural predators and habitat threat.

I too believe in "cats indoors" - not only that but all domestic pets should be kept strictly on the owner's property (dogs, cats, other).

Sorry to hear about the dead snake - one can only hope he didn't suffer for long.

And for what it's worth, cats have been listed as one of the 100 most invasive species around the world.

Lotsa links here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=100+most+invasive+species&btnG=Google+Search&aq=1&oq=100+most+invasive+s

Well if you have coyotes in the hood it balances out. My daughter's still waiting for Jasper to come back, he left 18-months ago.
