I owe you an apology. The first tip is no longer valid in Firefox on the Mac. Firefox now uses the Mac's default, which is to jump between various interface elements. You can still get to the search field with tabbing, it just takes a few more keypresses.
BUT...
The second tip is valid and honestly if you try the second tip you probably won't give a damn about the first tip being no good anymore.
