I don't want the cursor to default to the search field for this reason:
When I am viewing a page, I often want to scroll down a page at a time so, I instinctively hit the spacebar.
If the cursor is in the search field, hitting the spacebar just types a space there and if I want to page down, I have to click outside the search field.
Then, having typed a space in the search field, if I try to close that window, I get that annoying warning telling me I have entered text on the page and asking if I am sure I want to close it.
Different strokes, I guess.
