I concur with jdc. You may have purchased the G5 Tower in 2005, but it's still slower than a 3-year old ordinary iMac.
Intel Macs aren't new anymore. An affordable student budget low-end MacBook can outperform a five-year-old PowerPc system. Heck man, a $300 PC can outperform it.
I've put RAM and other upgrades into older systems than that, G4 towers, for example. But they were hobby systems, not my primary workhorse. A pony is due for retirement, or maybe extended service as a secondary player after 3-5 years.
Sorry to hear you've not had an opportunity to upgrade from your five-year-old tower, hope you can afford a more current Mac soon!
