Nothing signals coming dark ages like people getting iPhones and high definition TVs. It's called an "ELE" (pronounced "ellie" ). Extinction Level Electronics. They did that movie about it years ago, with Morgan Freeman, "Cheap Impact". Apple discontinued its exclusive with AT&T and heavily subsidized iPhones finally became available through multiple carriers and, *bam*, suddenly society was on the verge of collapse. But civilization was saved at the last minute when Steve Jobs decided texting and fart apps weren't needed anymore and Apple killed both in a new iPhone software update. All of the sudden people started using their phones just to make phone calls and we were saved.
