I personally am not crazy about teensy little contacts for anything, especially anything carrying a half amp at 5 volts, but if it works for ya, then go for it. I have several pieces of detritus floating around that use the mini and micro USB connectors in several variations of their shapes, but none of the things I have draw any power to speak of. Technically speaking, 24 gauge wire or its equivalent of copper board trace will cary a half amp OK -- it's the reliability of the contact wiping areas that I worry about -- how many cycles of insertion on those beentsy little thangs before they short out or wear through?
You know connectors for things are like oil filters for vehicles -- the whole world could get by fine with three or four types, but those dang engineers are just sure they have a special need or a better idea and then we end up needing things we can't get or pieces that don't mate. I give you the example of cell phone power connectors. BAH.
