I used to edit a magazine where we inevitably needed a few pages of filler every month.
I usually wrote the filler myself, under a pseudonym.
We had a big enough archive that when I was stuck for ideas I could go through some of the earliest publications and find subjects worth updating.
Sometimes I'd take a couple of friends to lunch, buy them a couple of beers each and have them pitch the craziest things they could come up with. The sillier, the better. I'd write the ideas down on a legal pad and when I needed filler I'd have someone pick something randomly from the list. I'd then write something on that topic, no matter how awful I thought the topic was. That was some of the best writing I've ever done.
