AFAI have seen, every kid is that smart if adults talk to them and answer their questions. They will also pick up things you have said only once or twice and parrot them back to you in reasonable context, or later make the connections to the actual context and have learned it for good.

Researchers have done studies comparing the learning capabilities of human babies and great ape babies and it's completely different. The apes learn the entire concept of what they need while they're doing it for the first few times, because the scope and depth what they need to learn is simpler (of course).

Human babies mostly just copy actions at first. There is little deeper learning because they need to learn so many things and those things are more complex, so just parroting what the parents do is better (the parents must be doing it for a good reason as they're not dead yet!). The babies can learn the reason and meaning of it later as they spend more time doing those activities. I'll look for the reference…
