Dumb question-- how do you get the MacOS search feature to work?

Search feature finds barely anything, no matter which of the confusing buttons I try (this mac vs. whatever.)
I suppose it's possible I've turned off indexing, but I can't find a way to turn it back on.
Snow Leopard. Almost any help appreciated.
