My GF's oldest kid had on some really oversized jeans way down low, with half his crack hanging out. I told him those pants were not appropriate to wear. He argued that everyone was wearing them like that. I promptly pantsed him and asked if that was a potential risk in a high school hallway. He quickly went back downstairs, and came back up in proper sized pants, and a belt. You can't tell a kid, you have to show them. I have also threatened to video them at the dinner table if they didn't believe what I said I was observing.

Good for you. When my kids accuse me of not being like everyone else's parents, I agree with them. When they say "you're so mean", I say "and don't forget, I'm cruel and heartless too." The result is that I have (based on others' reports, not necessarily my own experience) some of the nicest kids around.
Kids need, and want, limits. I teaches them that someone cares, and that there are reasonable limits to behavior.
Good luck.
