Is there a way to update iPod without iTunes?

Hi,

Is there a way to update iPod without using iTunes? I have DVDs with mp3 files that I would like selectively upload to my iPod. It is my collection of CDs that I once ripped into mp3 files.

I just do not want to copy all the files to the hard drive because my DVD player plays mp3 files and my PowerBook's disk space is limited.
