you need to use both connectors. Two USB inputs mean that the drive doesn't get enough power to operate from one USB connection (on a computer... unpowered hubs don't count.)
And this can become an interesting exercise on some of the Aluminum MacBook Pros that have two USB ports, but one is on the left side, and the other is on the right side.
