I'm not sure any service out there is "idiot-proof" (I'm not trying to be rude or demeaning to your non-tech savvy friends/family...I struggle with the same issues when trying to figure out "easy" stuff for my mom to do online).
But, I use smugmug for personal stuff (there's a free trial, but after that it's a pay service). I have one account for which I share the pw with family all around the world. They then can create their own galleries within my account and post pictures to their own albums within their gallery.
Because there's so much competition in this space, I think every service is trying to match and then outdo the others, so it makes for sites that are feature-rich, but complicated.
I've never liked flickr, but I use it to post work-related pics (because I don't want work people seeing my personal stuff on smugmug). I'd imagine that you could set an account up in a similar fashion to what I've set up with smugmug, but I've just never found their interface very intuitive.
By the way, you can order prints directly on smugmug too.
Anyway, if you do find a service that's for the non-techie crowd, please report back.
