The word I hear is that granite is on the way out as the in thing for the kitchen.
I think people should get what they can afford that pleases them asthetically and that accomplishes what they need it to. Fashion be darned! If that's granite or quartz then go for it.
I'm looking at solid surface right now for a kitchen redo, but I've had very good luck with laminate - no stains or scratches at all on my highly used, light colored, 15 year old laminate countertops. On a limited budget I'd rather spend money on beautiful functional cabinets and drawers than on super expensive countertops.
I also heard that stainless steel is becoming less popular, white is making a comeback.
