I wanted to address your use of "registered owner." This supposes that law-abiding citizens follow the rules and obtains legally registered weapons. This is how it is supposed to be. And it is also how the laws are structured today: law-abiding citizens purchasing legal and registered firearms and using them responsibly.
This thread centers around a convicted criminal and his stepson and their possession of what are illegal firearms.
So what you seem to be advocating is the intrusion and prosecution of law-abiding citizens over the convicted criminal who is obtaining his/her weapons outside the scope of legal firearms purchases and transfers. Penalize those who follow the law?
