If you're not in a swing state, then showing support for a third party candidate makes sense. If you are in a swing state, then voting for a third party is the same thing as voting for the repub or dem that you would least like to win (i.e. you would be voting against yourself). Also, keep in mind that in the presidential race, you have vastly more power than those of us in non-swing states. Your single vote is worth 1000s of times more than my vote, but only if you wield it to vote for one of the two candidates that are in the competition.
Unfortunately, until ranked choice voting makes it to the presidential election, it is a two-way competition and third party candidates only serve to result in people voting against their own interests.
