I know it's cost; if they only make one zoom direction (that of Nikon) it costs them less. But surely it wouldn't cost that much to make a mirror-image zoom mechanism for Canon (and whoever else is backwards from Nikon) and change the paint on the barrel/zoom ring accordingly.
Actually there are some Tokina and Sigma lenses that zoom the Canon direction. Sigma in particular keeps changing their mind. I believe the current 70-200 2.8 OS Sigma zooms the Canon direction. The current 24-70mm 2.8 SIgma zooms Nikon but the previous version zoomed Canon. There is no rhyme or reason.
