FWIW I remember reading somewhere (Yahoo?) awhile back about some guy getting rid of his stash of razors because he found a way to make them last longer and stay sharp.

Basically, wipe it completely dry after each shave with a towel and don't leave it in the shower.

I've been doing it ever since and it works - still using the same razor for the past 6 months.

Granted, I'm not shaving on a daily basis...

It does work. I also use the hair on my arms as a kind of strop, running the razor backwards up each arm 25 to 30 times after each shave.

I use a Gillette Fusion razor, and each cartridge will last several months.

I rarely use shaving cream or gel, but will sometimes put lotion on before shaving, of course at the moment I have a full beard for the winter, but I still shave my neck and trim the edges.
A big part of it is that people commonly confuse stainless steel as rust free, which simply is not true. Technical term is cress Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel. Note RESISTANT, not RUST FREE. Keeping a straight bladed razor in a wet environment like a shower will cause micro pitting on the edge.
