i have just used barbasol from a can and used the brush to whip in around.
I still have a can of Nivea gel recommended here last year. Don't remember which one, let's say it's this one. If you're going to stick with something that squirts out of a can, it's a good way to go.
The creams and pucks of course require a brush for any sort of lather, and there are many brushes and creams and pucks to choose from. The good news is, unlike the stuff in cans, pucks and tubes of cream can last a LONG time. Shaving every other day or sometimes everyday, a puck I bought late last summer is still going strong. That's darn cheap. My Omega synthetic brush is holding up perfectly also.
Anyway, even for someone sticking to disposable cartridges, *they* say a quality soap puck/cream and brush adds a nice experience to shaving. Don't forget to start with warm/hot water and rinse your face with cold.
Note: some guys don't get fancy with soaps or just use the shave oil from Wal-Mart. Admittedly, it can be a luxury you don't need (albeit one that doesn't cost much?) and regular hand/body soap works, too. Shaving cream is "just" soap after all ….
