tooth implant advice?
#9
Be very careful and approach with caution, after implantation of the posts I developed a serious infection that he unsuccessfully attempted to treat with two different antibiotics for one month. Finally he changed course went back in and removed the posts and treated with topical antibiotics and said to let heal for several months before revisiting. I terminated any further treatment with him and changed to the oral surgeon who did the implants for my wife. When notified of my dissatisfaction with his services he agreed to fully refund the $6200 I had paid for procedures related to two implants in upper jaw (more difficult than lower jaw owing to thinner jawbone and proximity to sinus cavities). The refund was likely prompted by my reading up on malpractice suits and how to start the process by making requests for complete transcripts of all my records and X-rays in their office. Once his staff notified him of my requests I suddenly got a call from him and a long discussion ensued where I told him of my reasons for going elsewhere and subtly implied that I was more than ready to go to court if necessary.

Just remember there is no such thing as a risk free medical procedure, when they tell you that in one of every 1000 procedures there is a risk of complications up to and including death take it seriously and choose your doctors very carefully. When you happen to be the one in a thousand that experience complications it is very serious and in my case the infection could have quickly become life threatening. Reading online the statistics relating to complications from implants included the number of deaths directly related to infections was very alarming, a small percentage but still a real number representing real people that lost their lives just trying to fix a minor inconvenience like missing teeth.

I should add that I am particularly sensitive on this subject as five years ago during a routine colonoscopy the doctor perforated my colon resulting in three days in the hospital on IV antibiotics. So I am of the opinion that for whatever reason I seem to be cursed with the worst outcomes with routine medical events and the less I see of doctors the longer I may live.
