I can't say that my observations are the same. When traveling the rivers and wetlands around here I see LOTS of fishermen. 90% men - most women I see are there with their man and not fishing themselves. Also most that I see (except the seasonal salmon fishermen) are very poor, immigrants and look like they are fishing for dinner - not sport.
The more touristy zones fit closer to your description - families out for a fun day or couples both fishing, but when I get out there it's 90% immigrant men who are serious about getting some food (or in the case of sturgeon fisherman - GOLD!)
To me, 'The most diverse collection of humanity I've observed in my life' can be found waiting in line at the DMV. At least back before the internet - EVERYONE had to go to the DMV to get their biz done. You'd see men in fancy suits next to guys in baggy pants falling below the waistline. Women in business suits next to women in tank tops.
