Our copper/fiber/whatever phone service is right about 35Mbps but this isn't the rock-solid "DSL" I'm used to in years past. It spikes up and down somewhat, as if it were cable service.
Throughout a day or so we'll have a "pause" where everything feels slow but what really happens is nothing happens for several seconds, like someone temporarily unplugged the DNS service (yes we use Google's or Open DNS' addresses).
$18 of our bill is for a landline we don't use but are obligated to keep for IP service. There is no alternative, zero competition at our location ... thanks, Congress, for giving ISPs the "freedom to innovate!"
