Anyone have a mom and pop email server you like?
#9
Setup your own at someplace like Hostgator? The Hatchling Plan is about $30 a year and you can have a website and as many email accounts as you want. Even if you don't really use the website, having control of your own system is okay. It looks like they will also register a domain for you for the first year.

I don't want to start any pissing matches on web hosts. I've been with Hostgator for about 13 years now and rarely have any issues. I would say their 99.9% uptime guarantee is accurate.

The only downside to this is that you are committing to do that on a long term basis if you want any permanence to your email address. If you want permanent, there's really not a substitute for Gmail at this time. I'm not really sure what it is about Gmail you don't like. If it's the "they know everything argument"...they will know everything no matter what you do.
