What bird is colored like a cardinal but has no crown?

This looks like the males I see, maybe 2 or 3 a year. I presuming the drab ones are the female. They look like a female cardinal without the crest and are about 7/8 the size.

Edit: From what I've read lately, the females are yellow and juvenile males are splotched with dull red.
