i am not sure if they started this program. When they do, you may be able to DIY.
EDIT: I missed the fact it was purchased 4 years ago, so this is the 2016 model, not the 2020. Even the repair program mentions iPhone 12 and 13, I would be surprised if they expand it to cover iPhone SE.
I have several iPhone SEs with that issue, my son carries an external battery pack at school. You can probably get it replaced by Apple for $49 or maybe $79, not sure what it costs now.
