Not to them. People want to win regardless of whether or not they actually win. If they can't win, they they'll use whatever tools are available. If the tools aren't there, then they'll work to develop tools that will allow them to defeat their opposition.
1. Term limits
2. Open primaries
3. Jungle primaries
4. Ranked choice
4. Voter suppression
Whatever it takes for an electoral minority to compete against a majority (actually racial minorities are an exception of course) is where your problem lay. Not whether or not it's misguided, because it's not that. It's strategy.
