I don't understand what the OP considers proper coverage of a mass shooting. When no new information is available, then the stories fade away. It's that way for every event. The incidents in Serbia stay in the news because those things don't normally happen in Serbia, hence "news". Here, yesterday's mass shooting is quickly pushed off the pages by today's mass shooting. Continued discussion moves off of the front page, but to the op-eds and talking head shows.
As for calling for the banning of assault weapons after a handgun massacre, obviously the focus should be on banning handguns. But then the OP's head explodes when someone suggests that.
